Welcome to Greenwood Academy

We welcome all pupils to Greenwood Academy and will provide the challenge, support and opportunities for all our young people to achieve the highest standards.  Our mission is to develop personal and academic excellence throughout our pupils’ educational careers.  Our motto, ‘To make our best better’ underpins our educational vision of success through knowledge and character development. By building the foundations for life-long learning, we ensure that pupils have the resilience, determination, creativity, healthy lifestyles and the qualifications for their life beyond the academy.

We work hard to ensure that every pupil receives individualised advice and guidance that will take them through Greenwood into our Sixth Form or a College and then on to University, apprenticeships or employment.

Community life

Our ethos and values ensure that we offer an exceptional learning experience as well as a real and tangible sense of community.  Education at Greenwood Academy is a partnership between the academy, pupils, parents/guardians and the wider community.  Ensuring all pupils have the opportunity of carrying out service within their community is an important part of the Greenwood experience and part of the academy’s wider commitment to character development of our pupils.

The strong links within the community are a distinct strength of the schools’ provision in ensuring we reflect local priorities and ambitions. We have strong links and partnerships with businesses such as Jaguar Land Rover, MITIE, Pinsent Masons and ensure that all our pupils have the opportunity to experience the world of work. At Greenwood, we believe that good communication with all partners is the key to a successful educational experience for our pupils.

Greenwood Academy has

Learning Experience

The curriculum provides pupils with effective strategies for knowledge acquisition, prepares them for GCSEs and A Levels and delivers exciting opportunities to apply their skills.  We also place high emphasis on healthy living and have a comprehensive programme of sports activities that provide extensive opportunities beyond the curriculum making the most of our new facilities.

Taking advantage of our state-of-the-art new building, we ensure that specialist spaces make the most of the latest technology available to us to enhance the learning for our pupils, including the Google Education platform.  Our digital learning platform is cloud-based, designed to support learning beyond the classroom, enabling pupils to access the world beyond Greenwood.

Our school

We regularly seek the views of students to help shape all aspects of academy life, everything from the curriculum down to food on our lunch time menu. We listen to students and recognise the importance of their voice in establishing a school ethos that everyone feels part of.

We want students to enjoy their time at Greenwood. Pupils find our staff to be approachable and observe the strong positive relationships between staff and students as being key to their progression.

Students at Greenwood welcome the opportunity to benefit from a range of activities that reinforce their positive relationship with school and maintain their motivation to succeed. The likes of our whole school events such as termly assemblies and annual summer fun days give students a real sense of community and belonging. Whilst access to artistic and sporting opportunities demonstrates to students our commitment to their growth in all aspects and way beyond the core curriculum.

Most importantly, students at Greenwood Academy tell us they enjoy coming to school and feel safe and secure.

Sixth Form Life

Greenwood Academy Sixth Form is dedicated to enriching the lives of students by helping them access the best possible opportunities to ensure a successful future. Our core aim is to prepare students for the adult world, both on a personal and academic level.

We offer a range of vocational and academic subjects at Level 3 and have forged strong links with local businesses, universities and apprenticeship providers in order to support students in making informed decisions about their future.

Students are supported daily by the Sixth Form Team to become well-rounded and fully developed individuals. We strive, through guidance and regular opportunities for reflection, to foster an environment of encouragement and aspiration.

Academically, students enjoy the benefits of specialist teachers with small class sizes and facilities in which they can both develop and practice their independent learning skills; the Sixth Form has its own dedicated study area, equipped with computers and laptops to aid students’ consolidation of knowledge outside the classroom.

Support Services

Greenwood Academy is committed to ensuring that no pupil feels that they are at a disadvantage to their peers. Our Learning Access department sits at the heart of the school and provides support to pupils and families to remove barriers to learning. All children are treated equally, with respect and with positive high expectations in order to strive to their full potential. The SEND provision is set up to reflect the 2014 SEND code of practice, meeting needs with each of the four categories of need; Cognition and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Social, Emotional & Mental Health difficulties and Physical and Sensory needs. The SEND provision at Greenwood Academy was described by Ofsted as "exceptional" in our last inspection in November 2014.

Greenwood Academy is home to a highly specialised resourced provision for Autism Spectrum Conditions commissioned by Birmingham LEA. The support offered creates sustainable inclusion for all pupils with Autism to enable access to mainstream education.
